Embrace Working From Home

I really wish that more companies become aware of the huge potential of letting their employees work from home. To me working from home has always been more productive than working from the office where there are constant interruptions.

Especially in the tech industry there are few reasons not to let people work from home. Often engineers working in the office create their own private space by wearing headsets in their cubicles. Then communicate with one another via instant messaging, bug trackers and email.

At home the same tools combined with Skype, Google+'s Hangouts can make one just as engaged with the team in the office (or their homes). There are many examples of sucessful companies that have embraced working from home: Github, 37 Signals are just 2 examples.

Personally I prefer to work from home 2-3 days / week where I can focus on my tasks at hand. And go in the other days to the office for face to face meetings, water cooler talks and close collaboration. Perhaps the flow chart below can help.
